Oct. 25th, 2010 10:34 pmWatched Sherlock last night on PBS and now I want it. I want it BADLY.
They took characters that have been amazing to begin with and modernized them with flare and elegance.
Also fascinating how it was done by the same people who did Docter Who. I can feel the same dialogue patterns, which creates an interesting analogy of Sherlock as an all-too-human Doctor. Being a Timelord is one point, but to always see what no one else does and to have never been able to share that with other members of your species.
Doctor Who with minimal regard for the well-being of humanity...would that make Sherlock like the Master? Honestly I have very little familiarity with the Master storyline so I may be way off there.
It had everything. Speed, intelligence, style, and characters with just enough edge and issues to be fascinating. No wonder (as
lavinialavender told me) people across all fandoms are hooked. It has the scifi edge without the scifi, a crime show without the feel of formula, wit and humor without being a baldfaced comedy. I adore this show. and want more.
Though it does makes me sad that after several months of obsession pretty much with Supernatural alone, this one has come in so fast.
Also, I love how accurate to the original books it is. "A Study in Pink" last night had beautiful details cut from "A Study in Scarlet" (though thankfully without the weird Mormon plot that would have been difficult to transfer into mordernity).
Another reason I loved it was that it reminds me of Freak Camp. Sherlock twitches at complements in the most interesting ways.
MUST WATCH MORE. I drove to Chicago and back (8 hours round trip) to get my visa and thought about it off and on for the entire trip, probably for a couple attenuated hours. In contrast, White Collar got probably half an hour, and SPN only got thinking time if you count Freak Camp.
Speaking of: SO MANY WORDS.
Now, excuse me, I need to give Sam a laptop.
